Imagine adding a beautiful fountain, with gently splashing water, to your pond or small lake! A fountain/aerator increases the oxygen level of the water in your pond, keeps your pond cleaner, controls weed growth and odor, and helps to control mosquitos. It’s much easier, and far less expensive, to accomplish this than you realize. You simply have to consider the size, shape, and makeup of your pond, choose the fountain that will work best, install as instructed, and you’ll have a visually appealing water feature to enjoy for many years to come.
The first consideration is the size of your pond. Smaller, garden sized ponds are normally plastic lined or have a concrete bottom, and are either filled manually, or by a well or spring. Fountains for these ponds do not require near the ability to move as much water volume as medium to large ponds and small lakes do, and therefore, the fountain used will generally be quite different. Here are a few basics to help you choose the correct fountain for your garden pond:
The height of the fountain spray should not be greater than one half of the width of your garden pond.
- Daisy or tiered sprays require more maintenance and can cause significant water loss on windy days.
- Bell or Tulip spray shapes work best in open and windy areas to prevent water loss.
- Bubbler fountains require a stronger pump to achieve the desired appearance.
Medium to larger-sized ponds and small lakes are normally fed by rain runoff and require a high volume, propeller driven fountain that is not only decorative but very effective in maintaining water quality due to the high volume of water movement necessary for a larger pond.
-
Display fountains in larger ponds and lakes take water from the deeper, colder areas of the pond and force it into the air in a beautiful display. The water used to produce the display captures oxygen and then releases it into the water as the water hits the surface of the pond or lake.
-
Display fountains in larger ponds and lakes often move massive amounts of water (up to 30,000 gallons).
-
For proper aeration, larger ponds and lakes may require 2 fountains, especially if they are long and narrow.
