Pond Pumps and Water Features
Pond pumps are the heart of your pond, and not only filter your pond, but also power water features, such as waterfalls and water fountains. Pond pumps re-circulate the water in your pond, are most often submersible, and run continuously.
Because your pond pump may run continuously for months, you’ll want to consider durability and energy efficiency when choosing the right pump for your pond. Saving money up front with a cheaper pump often results in higher energy bills in the long run.

In addition to durability and efficiency, you’ll want to consider the size pond pump you’ll need for the water feature you wish to power in your pond. Pond pumps are rated by GPH (gallons per hour) or GPM (gallons per minute) produced. Your pond pump should be able to re-circulate at least half the volume of water in your pond every hour. For example, if your pond holds 1,000 gallons of water, you’ll need a 500GPH pond pump. (For more information about calculating the water volume for your pond, please see Water Volume.) However, if you’re powering a pond filter or waterfall, then the flow rate for the filter or the height and width of your waterfall must be considered when choosing your pond pump. It may even be wise to power your pond features, such as the filter and waterfall, on separate pumps, because the required flow rate may differ significantly for each water feature.
